The Case for Natural Herbal Remedies: A Return to Root Causes

How I Woke Up

Let me give you a little background on how I found myself diving headfirst into herbalism. I have been in the medical field since I joined the Air Force in 2001 as a clinical laboratory scientist. However, 14 years ago, my aunt, who was the only mom I knew, fell ill with brain cancer. A very physically fit, healthy woman, it was shocking, but that’s when the research began. From what is in our food to what they put into our bodies. Vaccines, dental fillings, fluoride in the drinking water, pesticides, chemicals and artificial food, it was terrifying.

Why You Should Wake Up

In today’s fast-paced world, we’ve become accustomed to seeking quick fixes for our ailments. It’s almost second nature to reach for a pill when we feel under the weather. I myself find my mind going here first, but what if we paused to consider an alternative approach? Our society has long been conditioned to rely on medications that merely treat symptoms rather than addressing the root causes of our health issues.

For example, you visit your doctor for a headache. Instead of delving into potential underlying causes—like dehydration, stress, or dietary deficiencies—you’re prescribed a medication to alleviate the pain. That medication may momentarily relieve your discomfort, but it doesn’t teach you anything about your body or how to support it in the long run. This symptom-centric approach not only perpetuates a cycle of dependency on pills but also overlooks the powerful healing capabilities available through nature.

We have to retrain our minds to first reach for the natural solutions and seek western medication second.  When we consider the wealth of natural herbs and remedies that have been utilized for centuries, it’s clear that these options should be our first line of defense. They should not be a last-resort gamble when modern medicine has failed us. Think of herbs like chamomile for relaxation, ginger for nausea, or turmeric for its anti-inflammatory properties. These are not just old wives’ tales! They are gifts from nature, imbued with healing potential that the pharmaceutical industry has often sidelined.

The Conspiracy

I was not raised on a farm, with knowledge of God’s herbs or how to garden. Everything I know I learned in this last decade through study, and running my own homestead. While not an expert, I do constantly seek knowledge in this area by constantly researching and testing recipes. It is exciting and I am constantly in awe of how well natural herbs work. I shouldn’t be. I should trust that what God gave us works wonders. However, we have been conditioned to believe that natural remedies do not work as well as western medication. When we find something on the market that is labeled as ‘natural’ it does not have the same potency as western medication. I believe this is for a reason- to condition us to always reach for the one that works best, the poison.

I have found that by growing my own herbs and making my own concoctions that these herbs do in fact work better than any natural remedy I have found on the market. Is it because I can make my own recipes and concentrate them to a point where they are more potent? Is it because I grow them naturally in a garden that I tend and take care of with no pesticides? I don’t know. But if these are the reasons, everybody should have the knowledge to make their own remedies. Or you should at least have access to purchase these amazing remedies that is not from a commercial store.

Let’s be honest what you’re finding at Walmart labeled as ‘natural’ has 1 million loopholes to be able to label it that way, even though it may not in fact be natural. I also believe that there is a conspiracy by big Pharma to make natural remedies seem less effective. This way the majority of the money keeps going back in their pocket when you revert to western medicine. The reality is, there’s often a far greater financial incentive in managing symptoms and side effects than there is in finding genuine, lasting healing solutions.

Where to Start

God has provided us with a diverse array of plants and herbs meant to nourish and heal our bodies. From the ancient wisdom of traditional medicine systems to the plant-based movement gaining ground today, there’s a growing recognition that we can empower ourselves with knowledge on how to care for our bodies holistically. Transitioning to a lifestyle that prioritizes natural remedies doesn’t mean abandoning modern medicine entirely. Rather, it’s about creating a balance and becoming more attuned to what our bodies truly need. Who wouldn’t prefer to address the root causes of their discomfort and gradually cultivate wellness instead of merely masking symptoms?

Notably, taking steps toward this balanced approach requires education and understanding. Research the herbs and remedies that resonate with your specific health needs. You can become an active participant in your own healing journey.  Let’s shift the narrative around health and wellness. Harness the power of nature and be proactive rather than reactive. Start by exploring herbal remedies as your first choice. After all, healing from the root up is far more rewarding than simply treating the branches. Embrace the natural gifts surrounding us, and together, let’s forge a healthier, more empowered way of living.
